Here you can also see the ancient ruins of the Temple of Hercules that dates back to (AD 161 – 180), the Byzantine Church, the Omayyad Palace, and the Archaeological Museum which has an excellent collection of the antiquities of Jordan. At the foot of the Citadel is the 2nd century AD Roman Theater, still used for cultural events.Drive east towards the Desert Castles which were built in the 7th & 8th century AD as retreats from city life. Widely varied in function & architectural style, these ancient castles, baths, hunting lodges & fortified palaces were mostly belonging to Umayyad princes.Qasr el-Kharaneh, which was rebuilt by the Umayyads in (AD711) over a Roman or Byzantine site. This great structure, with its imposing walls and narrow slits, looks like a military fortress; experts believe that it was probably used as a caravan stop, being set on the path of several ancient trade routes.Qasr Amra is the most charming of all the Umayyad buildings in Jordan. It was built as a bath-house (a place of leisure) by the Umayyad Caliph el-Walid around (AD 711). The real outstanding attraction of Qasr Amra is the frescoes (panelmural) adorning its interior walls and ceilings. They are of exceptional interest for what they portray of human life: men hunting, athletes competing, women bathing and dancers performing and hence Qasr Amra registered as a World Heritage site by the UN.Qasr el-Azraq (Qal’at el-Azraq ) was built by the Romans as a military outpost. It was then used by the Byzantines, and later on by the Umayyad Caliphs for their hunting expeditions in and around the marshs. Qal’at el-Azraq is most famous for having been the headquarters of T.E. Lawrence, better known as “Lawrence of Arabia,” in World War I during the Great Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Turks.

On the top of the hill, housed beneath a protective structure built by the Franciscans, are the ruins of a beautiful small church, built by the early Christians in the 4th century AD. Inside, are the remains of mosaic floors with stunning designs that feature hunting and pastoral scenes. From a platform in front of the church, a visitor may see a bronze memorial of a snake on a cross which symbolizes the serpent lifted up by Moses in the desert, as well as the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.Proceed to Madaba, home of the most famous Byzantine mosaics. Visit the greatest and most significant of all the city’s treasures, the wonderful mosaic map of ancient Palestine, which is located on the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. The 6th century AD map, hailed as the oldest in existence, was depicted for the benefit of the pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land, as it represented the surrounding regions as well. The River Nile, the Jordan River, Lake Tiberias and the Dead Sea are easily identified on this map, in addition to many cities such as Bethlehem, Gaza and Jerusalem. One can clearly make out the walls, towers, gates, streets and buildings of the Holy City of Jerusalem, especially the colonnaded main street or Cardo, and the domed Church of the Holy Sepulcher.Continue through the stunning canyon of Wadi el Mujib to Kerak, where you will visit its imposing Crusader castle built in (AD1142).
